We had the best time at our second female Skillshare event focussed on edit producing this weekend! The sessions were incredible and a massive thanks to all of those who attended plus our wonderful key skillsharers Gemma M., Ren Forrest, Simone Coakham, Catherine Hunter - Available to edit remotely or onsite, Laura Abrahams and amy fathers who provided expert knowledge, skills and the most supportive uplifting space. Also massive shout out to the generosity and kindness of Evolutions and Five Mile Films for supporting the session with their space, equipment, wonderful teams and footage. If you don’t know who we are or what we do but want to get involved here is a bit more info about The Female Skillshare collective;"Female Skillshare Collective is a new not for profit initiative aimed at creating safe, curious and free spaces for anyone female identifying to learn and share a range of factual tv skillsets. The aim of the collective is to provide a space where women can get hands on with kit (from cameras to edit software) and have the space and time to explore, build confidence, ask questions and learn from each other in a non-judgemental and fun environment. The idea was born out of the recent stats highlighting the decline in female directors within the industry and the challenges many of us have faced personally being female identifying in tv. The first two sessions hosted with Evolutions Bristol, VISUAL IMPACT (BRISTOL) LTD. and supported by Five Mile Films were fully booked within 48 hours of the events being launched on social media. The team are currently working on a range of new sessions for 2024 based on feedback as to what our growing community would like to focus on."Miky King Steph Hopgood Samantha Williams Carly Aston

📺🔍 Unpacking the latest NKU-ruling on TV Format imitations: What it means for content creators and rights holders! 💼👩⚖️#TVFormats #FormatProtection In a recent case brought before the NKU (the Council dealing with unfair marketing practices in Norway), the central question was whether a TV show focused on exploring and experiencing 'typical Norwegian' culture constitutes a breach of the "fair business practices"-standard set out in § 25 of the Marketing Control Act. The complainant, Lucky View AS, argued that TV 2 AS' series "Abu og Majoo’s Norge" resembled the complainant's YouTube series "Safari på safari" to an extent that it constituted a breach of the "fair business practices"-standard.Both series follow individuals with foreign backgrounds on a journey to explore Norway. Many of the locations visited in "Safari på safari" were featured in "Abu og Majoo’s Norge". Furthermore, the latter undertook numerous "typically Norwegian" activities identical to those in the complainant's series, such as bungee jumping in Rjukan and fishing in Lofoten. The NKU unanimously decided that TV 2 had not violated § 25, even though the two shows shared several similarities. The NKU states that the distinctiveness in "Safari på safari" has not been replicated in "Abu og Mayoo’s Norge". "Safari på safari" presents itself as a more cheerful and charming series, and the distinctive group dynamics in "Safari på safari," where two native Norwegians get carried away sharing the inquiring and impulsive experiences of Safari, are not present in "Abu og Majoo’s Norge".This decision is in line with the NKU's decision on TV formats in last year's case between VGTV v. Monday Production AS (case no. 01-2022), where the NKU held that the "look and feel" of the complainant's series had not been replicated in the respondent's series. This recent case further highlights the challenges surrounding format protection in the Norwegian legal landscape, where recent decisions establish a high, but legally sound, threshold for infringement.https://lnkd.in/d5G6fwCK

When we talk about a genre in crisis, we should be talking about a crisis of creativity. The issue isn't that we lack the ability to generate stories; it's just a matter of searching among the thousands of projects by independent producers to find authentic gems. The real problem is that we don't know how to search, we don't know how to listen to the audience; we only know how to read the results of algorithms. We must support free creativity and back to rely on our intuition when commissioning content. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dXK6u2Fi

Semi-live TV on a budget. It's a way of approaching events and video we've been evangelising since early in the pandemic. The basic idea (which we of course did not invent) is to pivot from "I need an event with many moving parts and variables" to "I can probably achieve a similar outcome with something much smaller"In the past months I've seen SolarPower Europe, DIGITALEUROPE, FoodDrinkEurope ,Microsoft's EU office (Evan Lamos), Cefic (European Chemical Industry Council) and FTI Consulting EU and WindEurope put out excellent products that embrace this concept. While we won't cover this topic explicitly, we'll be practising what we preach in a few weeks on 25 May when we'll film three 30-minute "TV specials" meant to serve as a definitive explanation of three of our methodologies:1) LinkedIn/thought leadership2) Group creative ideation (Idea Sprint)3) Physical experience ideation Small in-person audiences, Five (highly visual) slides or fewer, a venue that demands people to enter another headspace than the typical EU bubble.Excited to have the small groups on hand, but perhaps a bit more excited to see the final videos and the wider (but still niche haha) audience we can engage with them.If you want to join, I'll drop a link in the comments.

Pass me my snips, Part I This week I'm working with three of my favourite clients. Actually, all of my clients are my favourite clients because I now only work with clients that I vibe with. That means there is mutual respect and trust. We get better results. A little late... but here is a snippet of the top of my 713 Day news "show!"Launching "KPRC 2+ Now" has been a rollercoaster. I've had to re-learn how to produce and write a show. We stopped calling it a "newscast" because the format is so far from it.Every day I'm challenged to reinvent the wheel; think of a new and "innovative" way to tell a story. The show airs at 8 am, by this point three hours of news have already aired and streamed. Most stories have aired at least twice, so how can I make them different? I'm positive that all producers face that question at least once a day. Whether it be a news producer, a content creator, or a communication specialist for a PR agency; our goal is to tell a story.

Kaye Elliott reflects on 10 years of the High-end TV Skills FundThis year marks ten years of the High-end TV (HETV) Skills Fund. As we mark the occasion with a series of features that look at the the work of the Fund in the last ten years, ScreenSkills' Director of High-end Television, Kaye Elliott, shares her thoughts. 2023 marks the tenth year of the industry led High-end TV Skills Fund, an incredible milestone that I’m hugely proud to be a part of. Ten years is a long time in the rapidly evolving world of television so it’s only right that we celebrate the Fund’s tenth anniversary as we also look to the future. It represents an opportunity to reflect on the past 10 years, acknowledge those whose support has proved so vital to the Fund’s success, and look forward to the new opportunities up ahead. It was industry who, 10 years ago, had the foresight to understand the value of collective skills investment and created the HETV Fund to support freelancer skills development, to ensure the UK had an evolving and growing workforce and that, collectively, industry could be greater than the sum if their parts. The Fund over the last 10 years has steadily grown in scale, directly impacting thousands of individuals as they start or progress in their careers and opening the door to future generations of talent. This skilled and globally respected workforce has enabled so many first-class, globally renowned dramas, comedies, and unscripted productions to be made in the UK.I think first of the people whose careers have been supported and improved by the Fund, the initiatives that it has built and the talented workforce it has helped develop across the UK. Our new entrant programmes like #TraineeFinder and #FirstBreak that offer those vital first steps in the industry. Our long running mid-level progression programmes such as #LeadersofTomorrow and #MakeaMove, designed to help professionals step-up and progress to the next stage of their careers and help fill vital skills shortages. Our suite of Skills for All training, that provides freelancers at all stages of their careers with the tools to manage their teams, support positive mental health on productions and support those who have had a career break to return, whether that be full time or via a job share. Also access to bursaries to help individuals finance specialist training, driving lessons or access requirements. Each investment resulting in tangible progress in peoples’ careers and providing real change and growth for our industry.Find a link to the full-length piece on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eGgdvg6s

"Breaking the Silence: The Top Blunders Radio OAPs Make On Air"Radio On-Air Personalities (OAPs) are the lifeblood of any radio station, shaping the auditory experience for listeners across the world. However, even the most seasoned professionals can stumble into common pitfalls that can affect their on-air presence and the quality of their broadcasts. Let’s delve into the mistakes that OAPs often make on air, offering insights into how to avoid them and enhance their on-air performance.1. Lack of Preparation:One of the cardinal sins in radio broadcasting is stepping into the studio unprepared. OAPs need to research their content thoroughly, anticipate potential questions or discussions, and ensure they have the necessary materials at their fingertips. Lack of preparation can lead to stumbling, awkward silences, and a loss of credibility.2. Overloading with Information:While it's important to be well-informed, bombarding listeners with excessive information can be overwhelming and counterproductive. OAPs should aim for a balanced blend of facts, and engagement to keep their audience attentive and entertained.3. Monotony in Tone:A monotonous delivery style can quickly lull listeners into disinterest. OAPs should strive for a dynamic vocal range, employing variations in tone, pitch, and speed to maintain engagement and convey emotions effectively.4. Failing to Adapt to the Audience:Every radio station has a target audience with specific tastes and preferences. OAPs who fail to tailor their content to suit their listeners may struggle to resonate with their demographic, leading to a decline in listenership.5)Poor Interviewing Skills:Conducting interviews is an art that requires finesse. OAPs who dominate conversations, fail to actively listen, or don't ask engaging questions can undermine the quality of the interview and alienate guests.Radio broadcasting is a skill that demands a delicate balance of preparation, engagement, and adaptability. By recognizing and avoiding these common mistakes, OAPs can elevate their on-air performance, captivate their audience, and deliver a memorable listening experience.I am Aanu Akomolafe! As the Executive Director at Switch24, a skilled Media Consultant, and a proficient content writer with a diverse skill set, i promise to enrich the table with a wealth of experience and expertise which will make a positive impact in the realms of media and content creation.#radio#journalists#OAP#careerguide
