I rush up the stairs, late for the open mic night. A guy at the top asks, “Are you Anna?”“Yes,” I reply, surprised he knew me. “You’re new, right?” The guy asks as he introduces me to the host.“Do you know where you are on the lineup?” the host inquires.“Yes!” I exclaim, heart pounding and noticing I’m the only female in the first half. Comedy’s male domination is nothing new.Sitting through the lineup, I realise I’m the sole female comic. This reminds me of a San Francisco open mic back in 2018. That night fueled my desire to show women can be funny, leading me to New York City and start my journey into comedy — first improv, then storytelling, now stand-up. Stand-up feels daunting, but I’ve wanted to do it from the start, and now, after earning my chops in improv and storytelling, I feel ready. Have you ever wondered what happens when media personalities are fired from their networks? 🤔 The recent firing of both Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon from Fox News and CNN respectively has left many people scratching their heads. 🤷♂️ Here's a breakdown of what happened: 🔸 Carlson and Lemon were both talented at providing perspectives that confirmed their audience’s view of the world 🔸 It is not clear why they were fired, but in my view as a media scholar, they were removed because they no longer provided the benefits their employers expected 🔸 Their firings were likely an effort to sustain and grow corporate profits (not a victory for women or truth) 🔸 Cable news media in the 1990s relied on hyperpartisan reporting to target their programming to a single demographic 🔸 Carlson became a megastar with his own program, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” in 2016 🔸 Lemon positioned himself as CNN’s chief liberal scolder of the Trump era 🔸 Lemon was removed from the air so he could attend sensitivity trainings to address his sexist attitudes My key takeaways from this article are that cable news media has become increasingly hyperpartisan in order to attract a targeted demographic, and that the firings of Carlson and Lemon were likely an effort to sustain and grow corporate profits.
